Instagram highlights can be used to group and save old Instagram stories that you want to keep or “highlight” on your Instagram profile. Each highlight has its own cover image, with a place underneath for a title. As a default, your cover image will typically be a capture from one of the stories within the highlight. This quick tutorial will walk you through creating a set of highlight covers to provide a more cohesive look for your Instagram profile and overall brand.

Step 1: Find or create the images you want to use for your covers
- Photos: If you want to use photos, gather one for each cover and make sure they are saved to your phone’s camera roll.
- Graphics: You can find stock graphics and icons in numerous places online- some free, some paid (just make sure you’re clear on whether the license for the graphics/icons allows you to use them in this way). If you’re artsy (or know someone who is), you can create your own. Or if you want to get real serious, you can always pay for custom graphics/icons. Whatever is your jam, you’ll need to save these to your phone’s camera roll.
- Text: Using text that fits your branding is another great option. You can use any number of programs to create the text and select fonts, colors, etc. Again, you’ll need to get it saved to your phone’s camera roll as an image. Since these do not need to be high res, my personal tip (for simplicity) is to take a screenshot of the text. Be sure to zoom in closely so the font is clear. If you do this on your computer, you can email yourself the screenshot, then open it up and save it to your phone.
*Tip: The space is small so don’t try to get too detailed with images/graphics, and keep any text to a short-and-sweet word or two.
Step 2: Add your new cover images to your highlights
To add your cover to a new highlight:
- Create a highlight by clicking the circle with the “+” sign under your bio. You will need to have a story to save in the highlight (so either add a story that you want in the highlight first or select an archived story for the highlight).
- Tip: If you just want to create the cover for now, you can create a story that is just your cover image and then select that when you create your highlight.

- Select “Edit Cover” and choose your new cover image from your camera roll
*Tip: You can click on this image to move it around, center it, re-size it, etc.

To add your cover to an existing highlight:
- Select the highlight you want, open the highlight, and then click the three dots in the lower right corner.

- Choose “Edit Highlight” and then click “Edit Cover”. This will allow you to select your image from your camera roll.

*Tip: You can click on this image to move it around, center it, re-size it, etc.

I forgot the secret third step. Admire your beautiful new Instagram highlights.
